چکیده

This paper develops strategic foundations for a statistical model of random networks with heterogeneous expected degrees. Based on this, we show how institutional or technological changes that subtly alter the costs and indirect benefits of relationships can cause large changes in behavior and welfare. In the model, agents who value friends and friends of friends choose a level of social activity, which increases the probabilities of links but is costly. There is a sharp transition from fragmented, sparse equilibrium networks to connected, dense ones when the value of friends of friends crosses a costdependent threshold. This transition mitigates an extreme inefficiency.

Analytic Treatment of Tipping Points for Social Consensus in Large Random Networks

We introduce a homogeneous pair approximation to the naming game (NG) model by deriving a six-dimensional Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) for the two-word naming game. Our ODE reveals the change in dynamical behavior of the naming game as a function of the average degree {k} of an uncorrelated network. This result is in good agreement with the numerical results. We also analyze the extended NG model...

Coalitions, tipping points and the speed of evolution

This study considers pure coordination games on networks and the waiting time for an adaptive process of strategic change to achieve efficient coordination. Although it is in the interest of every player to coordinate on a single globally efficient norm, coalitional behavior at a local level can greatly slow, as well as hasten convergence to efficiency. For some networks, when one action become...

Examining the Role of Social Networks in Promoting Urban Culture (Case of Study: Citizens of Karaj)

This research has been conducted mainly to examine the role of social networks in promoting urban culture in Karaj citizens in 2018. The research intends to investigate the role of attendance in social networks and the type of using it to promote urban culture and social networks' role in the legalism, responsibility, participation, and universality that are the components of urban culture. Thi...

Tipping Points of Diehards in Social Consensus on Large Random Networks

We introduce the homogeneous pair approximation to the Naming Game (NG) model, establish a six dimensional ODE for the two-word NG. Our ODE reveals how the dynamical behavior of the NG changes with respect to the average degree < k > of an uncorrelated network and shows a good agreement with the numerical results. We also extend the model to the committed agent case and show the shift of the ti...

Managing ecological thresholds in coupled environmental-human systems.

Many ecosystems appear subject to regime shifts--abrupt changes from one state to another after crossing a threshold or tipping point. Thresholds and their associated stability landscapes are determined within a coupled socioeconomic-ecological system (SES) where human choices, including those of managers, are feedback responses. Prior work has made one of two assumptions about managers: that t...
